Peter Sailly Lock Box

This unusually fine lock box that belonged to Peter Sailly, and is part of a bequest from the family descendants is one that more than likely was used by Peter Sailly during the period that he was the Collector of Customs (1807-1826) in Plattsburg(h).  Other than being extremely heavy and made of thick walled cast iron, the cover of the lock set is made of brass with a concealed lever that allows the cover to slide back.  Once exposed, the key is inserted into the lock.  However, there is a problem! It appears that the key is the wrong one for the lock, and only the owner knows the secret; which is a cleverly concealed false end of the key, that once removed allows the key to operate the mechanism. The whole purpose of this was to deceive and delay the opening of the box by thieves.  Although not weighed, it appears to be well over 100 pounds, and not an item that could be easily transported by horseback.  This Lock Box is similar to those used by Wells Fargo and stagecoaches of the period, only much more elaborate.
