Edward Payson Baird (1860-1922) manufactured wall clocks in a
Plattsburgh factory from 1890 to 1896. It was located at what was
addressed as 18 Bridge Street, using waterpower from the adjacent
Saranac River. The site of the building, depicted on the Fausel
1899 birds-eye view of Plattsburgh, is now occupied by Highway Oil
gas station. Though most of Baird’s production was advertising
clocks, with fronts of molded papier mache, this example is of all
wood with no advertising. Baird, who worked as a teen for the Seth
Thomas Clock Company in Walcott, Connecticut, used Seth Thomas works
for all his Plattsburgh-made clocks.
In 1975 Plattsburgh’s Dr.
Leonard Schiff and his son Joseph wrote a book about Baird and his
clocks, copies of which can be read in Plattsburgh libraries. This
particular clock once hung on the walls of Plattsburgh Public
Library.
